As Prof. Ndili passes on, Airtel Africa’s Emeka Opara leads eulogies

The late Prof. Ndili

A LEGION of old and new members of the University of Nigeria (UNN) has been mourning the demise of erudite nuclear physicist and former vice-chancellor Frank Ndili.
Many of them, reacting across platforms on social media, speak in nostalgia about a man most called “humble.”
Prominent UNN alumnus Airtel Africa top shot Emeka Opara, leading the pack, seems to be short of words in his reaction.
He simply writes: “His (Ndili’s) legend reigned supreme in UNN during our sojourn in that citadel of learning, where he contributed to the restoration of the dignity of man!”
Clement Nwabichie writes: “Prof. Ndili was an intellectual giant with Prof. Onwumechili and Prof. Animalu in the Physics Dept. Great men but very simple and humble. That was when UNN was the University of Nigeria!!!
“May his good soul rest in the bossom of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.”
George Emeghara, who actually but unwittingly initiated the flurry, had written: “Anytime I see present-day vice-chancellors, rectors and heads of educational institutions driving around with their long convoys, with some of them blasting sirens and disturbing activities on their campuses, I remember Prof Ndili.
“He moved around the campus quietly and unobtrusively, in his immaculate white Peugeot 504GL, seated behind the driver and a university security man wearing their trademark uniform.
“Those were the days: days when quality people went about their duties quietly and effectively.
“These days many in such positions of authority are loud, boorish and very empty. The only thing on their minds is how to grab more and more money. That’s why things are the way they are.
“May Prof Ndili’s soul rest in peace.”
Indeed, Emeghara had reported on his Facebook page that, “the family of Prof. Frank and Dame Edna Ndili, wish to announce with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to God for a glorious, excellent, and exemplary life well-lived, the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and patriarch – Prof. Frank Nwachukwu Ndili.”
The sad event took place on February 13, 2024. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Prof. Frank N. Ndili – Ph.D Cantab, F.InstP (October 6, 1934 to February 13, 2024) – former vice-chancellor of the University of Nigeria, emeritus Prof. of Nuclear Physics, is survived by his beloved wife Dame Edna Ndili, his children – Dr. Isioma Ndili-Nwokolo, Dr. Amaechi Ndili, Dr. Awele Ndili, Dr. Ogugua Ndili Obi, Dr. Unoma Ndili Okorafor, Dr. Obianuju Ndili, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, nieces, nephews and many more.
He had an everlasting legacy of leadership, love, and excellence.
“May his great, generous, loving, and kind soul rest in perfect peace,” the family writes.
