Shaibu’s campaign train charges on despite confusion in Edo PDP, as ward congresses appeal panel sits this Wednesday

TO think that Edo State Deputy Gov. Philip Shaibu is in the eye of the storm but not batting an eyelid is to speak of a carefully organised campaign.
Shaibu’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State is today tottering, singularly on account of Gov. Godwin Obaseki not wishing his deputy to inherit the mandate.
But, the “100% Homeboy” is well equal to the challenge of fighting back, an-for-an-inch, if not better.
He is one of the nine governorship aspirants out of 10 saying so-called ward congresses towards a state gubernatorial primaries congress was a ruse.
As CentralNews predicted, national headquarters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has weighed in on the crisis rocking its Edo State chapter.
Its national working committee (NWC) has raised a three-member appeal panel to advise it on the rancorous ward congresses imbroglio seen in the state at the weekend.
In a statement, national organising secretary Umar Bature urges all concerned to accord the panel the necessary support and co-operation needed for the success of its assignment today.
Nine out of the 10 hustling for the party’s ticket in the governorship election coming up in September, say the “congresses” were a sham.
Bature names former Bayelsa State governor now Sen. Seriake Dickson chairman of the panel, with Hajiya Inna Ciroma (member) and Dr. Akilu Indabawa (secretary). Mrs. Godia Cephas Kwamblang is administrative secretary.
The statement reads in part, “The above named party members have been appointed by the NWC of PDP to serve on the WARD CONGRESSES APPEAL PANEL to consider appeals arising from the conduct of 3 Ad-Hoc Ward Congresses in Edo State.
“The appeal exercise is scheduled to hold on Wednesday February 7, 2024 at NWC Hall, Wadata Plaza, PDP National Headquarters, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja by 10 a.m.”
However, the Comrade Shaibu campaign leads among those believing that justice and reason would prevail. It says,
“Today, the Edo political atmosphere is engulfed in so much self-interest, intrigues and blackmail but only a few understand the real issues and how the best political party that desires to win can effortlessly have its way.
“Across all the political parties today, the expectations of most voters and party supporters is to have their party nominate an unbeatable candidate for the election; busy looking out for the best in terms of experience, capacity, political sagacity and competence on the job.
“That one is popular, marketable, sellable and acceptable to Edo voters. It is therefore expedient on us as loyal partymen and women who have for years supported out-going Gov. Godwin Obaseki’s government and indeed doing well in promoting the ideals, values, principles, people-centred policies and programmes of the PDP, to beg our party leadership not to allow the party lose at the election.
“Edo people believe so much in the party, the support for the party’s policies and programmes is huge but as a people and as a political party we must save our party from failing at the poll by sponsoring a candidate Edo people know, familiar with and can trust with their mandate.
“Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has all Edo people need at this critical time in our political history.
He is #100% Homeboy, a homegrown who understands the Edo political landscape, knows the growing needs of the Edo people and has practical solutions to addressing the myriads of our challenges.
“He is experienced, a veteran grassroots politician, a household name in the Edo political space who needs no introduction; loved, admired and respected by frontline traditional, religious and political leaders across the state.
“We must provide a level playing ground for all the aspirants at the party’s primary come 22nd February 2024. This is the only way the party can succeed.”
