Quicksands of democracy in Nigeria, the Edo State example (1)

CentralNews “Personality of the Week,” this week, is Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu. In this first of a 4-part piece, we take a resume published by the Edo State Government on its official social media handle. Tomorrow, we shall run another piece, also published by the state government, but in a different hue. Welcome:

THE Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, who was born on December, 1st, 1969 in Kaduna to Pastor Francis Shaibu and Lucy Momoh of blessed memories, hails from Jattu Uzairue in Etsako-West local government area of Edo State.
Comrade Shaibu started his education at St. Augustine Primary School, Tundun Wada, Kaduna but finished at L.E.A (Local Education Authority) Primary School, Barnawa, Kaduna State.
He attended Sardauna Memorial Secondary School, Kawo Kaduna where he obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1989. In 1995, he proceeded to the University of Jos and graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Accounting in 2000.
Hon. Shaibu had a stint at the Nigerian Prison Service, Abuja but voluntarily retired as an Assistant Inspector of Prisons in 2002 before venturing into politics in 2003.
In 2003 he contested elections into the Edo State House of Assembly on the platform of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) but his mandate was stolen.
Unruffled by the murky political waters, Shaibu once again in 2007, picked up the gaunlet, contested and won the election to represent the good people of Etsako-West Constituency on the platform of the Action Congress (AC) at the Edo State House of Assembly.
Parliamentary experience
Upon inauguration into the house, Comrade Shaibu was appointed the Minority whip of the 4th Assembly, and became the chairman house committee on education. Hon. Shaibu became the Majority Leader in 2010 and Chairman House Committee on Rules, Business and Government House.
Flowing from his mastery of the house politics and his political dexterity, Shaibu was re-elected into the house in 2011 and became House Majority Leader.
Hon. Shaibu maintained his position as chairman, house committee committee on Rules, Business and Government House even in the 5th Assembly until June 2015 when he was elected member of the House of Representatives for the Etsako Federal constituency.
Unlike other young men of his age, who vacillate like the changing taffeta, Shaibu’s human relations, sense of community development and philanthropy have remained unwavering.
The quintessential grassroots mobilizer Shaibu started his foray into politics during his student days at University of Jos when he got elected as the Welfare Secretary of the Student Union Government.
He never played politics with people: the people were his essence, especially the common people, they are his life. In his days as president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Comrade Shaibu gallantly fought for the re-in statement of over 486 politically rusticated Nigerian Students.
Leadership ingrained
In year 2000, during the President Obasanjo regime, Shaibu also fought for the increase in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) monthly allowances from N3,500 to N7,500. As a young vibrant student activist, was appointed the co-ordinator NANS Zone C.
Comrade Shaibu was elected the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the year 2000. As soon as he assumed the leadership of NANS he became very vocal on National Politics and issues. Not too long the nation began to notice his intellectuals and political prowess.
Hon Shaibu is an advocate of grassroots development, he has executed numerous developmental projects in all the 29 communities that constitutes his state constituency.
His projects rages from electricity, education as well as many human developmental programmes. In all, he has executed over forty two constituency projects which earned the sobriquet, “Mr. Constituency projects.”
Comrade Shaibu has used his skills to rewrite the narratives of not only Uzairue and Constituency 2, but has in a grand style, uplifted the entire Etsako beyond the tarnish and cavil of even the last charitable among the humans.
Shaibu has rendered to Etsako West Constituency 2 an unassailable quality representation in terms of infrastructural development, rural electrification, portable water and school buildings.
Furthermore in the area of human capital development and employment, the Shaibu sanctuary has exited hundreds from the labyrinth of untold hardship and a quandary to a pedestal of comfort and limelight. At individual levels, he has replaced frustration, despair, and animosity and persecution with comfort and relief.
Sacrifice, benevolence
To some persons, Shaibu is a God-sent, a comforter, the patron saint of the needy and father to the fatherless, these and many more has earned him the popular sentiments of Edo politics.
The Shaibu trajectory is easily a lesson in humility, simplicity, hard work, sacrifice, benevolence, patience, perseverance, courage, candour and total belief in God as the omnipotence, author and finisher of our fate.
In his eight years as a legislator in the Edo State House of Assembly, Comrade Shaibu set a record by sponsoring over thirty six (36) bills and moved over one hundred and six (106) motions on the floor of the house.
Hon. Shaibu has received awards and recognition from various groups and organizations, notable among them is the House of Representatives National Summit and Score Card Merit Award for Outstanding Public Office Holders where he was adjudged THE BEST LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR.
As chairman, house committee on education, he suggested policies that brought to an end the existence of miracle centres in the Edo state ministry of education.
Allegiance to party fidelity
Comrade Shaibu by his life has demonstrated a number of possibilities that rectitude is possible in public life, that intellectualism and public life is compatible and that ideological purity is possible in a milieu of convenience, that only the truly great are truly humble, that honest service brings enduring glory and applause and that a good name is better than gold.
Comrade Shaibu is a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and has demonstrated his unalloyed loyalty to the party severally even when his life was at stake. He has continued to pledge his full allegiance to the party even in the face of intimidation and harassment by the opposition.
Hon Shaibu, a dedicated public servant, just rounded up his Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme in the University of Benin.
Comrade Shaibu is a passionate and dedicated Catholic who particularly loves the Devine Mercy of Our Lord Jesus Christ and his family is enthroned to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
At his leisure, he plays golf, soccer and he loves reading and research. .
Comrade Philip shaibu is a Member of the National working Committee of the All Progressives Congress; the ruling party in Nigeria. He is a detribalized Nigerian patriot who believes in youth empowerment through education and mentorship. He is happily married and blessed with lovely kids.
Edo state has five (5) main ethnic groups in the State and they are Edos, Afemais, Esans, Owans and Akoko Edos. Virtually all the groups traced their origin to Benin City, Edo State which is the nation’s heartbeat.
