JSC Nweze, FHCJ Mallong die same day

Serving Supreme Court of Nigeria justice, Chima Centus Nweze, has been reported dead. He was aged 64.

Also on Sunday, Federal High Court judge Peter Mallong was similarly reported dead.

Justice Nweze, a native of Obollo in Udenu LGA of Enugu State, was born September 25, 1958 was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2014.

According to a report in the Daily Post, his death occurred on Sunday, but the apex court was yet to make an announcement to that effect as of noon on Monday.

Some of his landmarks at the Supreme Court include a dissenting judgement in 2020, declaring Emeka Ihedioha of the People Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State.

Also, in a split judgement of three-against-two, Nweze delivered the controversial judgement of the Supreme Court which declared then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 25 February 25, 2023 National Assembly election.

As for Kustice Peter Mallong, he was said to have died on Sunday after a brief illness. Chief Registrar, Federal High Court of Nigeria, Hassan Sulaiman, confirmed this on Monday.

Suleiman said, “Hon. Justice Peter Hoommuk Mallong, a judge of the Federal High Court, passed away on July 30, 2023, unexpectedly after a brief illness in Abuja. We will miss him more than words can express. “Funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public in due time.”
